MAPLETON, Ore. -- A motor home caught fire and blocked Highway 126W Friday afternoon just east of Mapleton, State Police officials said.

The driver said she heard a loud pop and started seeing some smoke come from underneath the vehicle. She pulled the motor home off the road before it was completely engulfed in flames, she said.

The passengers made it out of the motor home safely.

“Motor homes and trailers are just built out of a wood frame so basically it’s just a camp fire waiting to go,” said Trooper Darrell Sheets of Oregon State Police. “When a campfire or a trailer or a motor home catch on fire they go really fast.”

Highway 126 was closed for approximately one hour while crews put out the blaze. The highway reopened around 4:10 p.m. Friday.
