Man knocked unconscious March 1 dies; police charge suspect with manslaughter

EUGENE, Ore. - A man knocked unconscious by a punch who hit his head on the sidewalk March 1 has died.

Police identified the 47-year-old victim as Anthony Lee Garrett.

The man accused of throwing the punch now faces an additional charge of second degree manslaughter.

Police arrested 32-year-old Rodolfo Zambrano on the charge at the Lane County Jail, where he had been on a charge of second degree assault and a parole violation since his arrest after police say he threw the punch near W. Broadway and Olive.

The dispute spilled out of a bar March 1 after employees asked Zambrano and the man to leave the premises around 8:44 p.m. Saturday.

The area of downtown is home to several bars, earning the nickname the "Barmuda Triangle."

Bystanders told police the dispute continued outside the bar, with Zambrano shoving and punching the victim, police said.
 
Zambrano ran from the scene, police said. He was spotted by officers, who pursued him for a short distance before catching him and taking him into custody.
