Man drowns in river at Roseburg park

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A man drowned Friday afternoon in the South Umpqua River near a city park, Roseburg Police said.

The deceased was identified as 43-year-old Paul Gene Carroll Jr.

Witnesses told police Carroll came out of the bushes near the Templin Beach Boat Ramp in Roseburg and fell into the river. They saw him sitting upright in the water, only to notice him floating facedown on his stomach several minutes later.

A witness started CPR but was unable to revive Carroll. Emergency responders arrived on scene shortly before 5 p.m. and found Carroll unresponsive.

There was no evidence of any injury to Carroll and there is no suspicion of foul play, police said. Investigators said it appears Carroll died of an accidental drowning.
