'It's easy to forget the school zones and where they're at'

EUGENE, Ore. - The kids are back at school: Slow down.

As classes resume at public schools, police are cracking down on drivers who legally ignored schools zones while children weren't present this summer.

"You will see more especially traffic enforcement unit officers on the motorcyles in the area of the schools just trying to get people's minds to be thinking about the fact that kids are heading to the area now and just be aware of them," said Jim Ball with the Eugene Police Department.

Even parents caught up in the back-to-school hullabaloo may find themselves speeding through school zones.

"You know everybody's in a hurry, and you're all trying to get to where you need to be and get your children off to where they need to be so it's easy to forget the school zones and where they're at," said parent Beth Dau.

Ball said he has seen parents of students forget school zones.

"The one that kind of gets you is when they're taking their kids to school," he said. "You'd think they'd be in that mind thought that I got to slow down - and they don't."
