Shoes for Brattain House, donated by a 10-year-old who asked for them in lieu of birthday gifts.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - For her 10th birthday, incoming Mount Vernon Elementary School 5th grader Hailey Williams asked for shoes.

She got 16 pairs.

And she gave all of them to Brattain House, a program that helps Springfield School District students in need.

Candice Williams, Hailey's mom, said her daughter got the idea 3 months ago. Hailey asked her friends to buy new shoes instead of getting her a birthday gift.

Candice said Hailey learned a valuable life lesson about generosity and helping others.
