COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. - The ex-boyfriend of a missing Beaverton woman faces charges of murder, abuse of a corpse and tampering with physical evidence, the Lane County District Attorney's Office said.
Police arrived at 42-year-old David Bowen's Birch Street home on Tuesday night.
Investigators set up a crime scene and remained at the home through the day Wednesday, focusing on a shed, car and the house.
His neighbor wasn't sure what to make of the news that Bowen faced a charge of murder.
"He had come over several times and brought us some fresh eggs from his chickens," neighbor Rhonda Marlow said. "We had talked about his chickens getting out and getting in the yard. He just seems like such a nice guy. I'm not even sure what to think about all of it."
Tammy Borda, 55, had been missing since December 2.
She traveled to Cottage Grove from Beaverton for Thanksgiving and had not returned home.
Borda had been seen with Bowen, who friends described as a former boyfriend.
Bowen was booked into the Lane County Jail on Thursday. He appeared in court Thursday afternoon but did not enter a plea.
Family and friends of Borda attended the hearing.
"She would kind of just talk about how he wasn't too nice to her," said Jasmin Grimes, who said she was a friend of Borda. "We witnessed it almost every day that we saw her: like 'Tammy, he's not treating you the way you should be treated,' and she's like, 'I know, I know please don't say anything,.'"
Immediate family members leaving the hearing declined to comment.
In addition to the felony murder charge, he faces a felony count of second degree abuse of a corpse.
Tampering with physical evidence is a misdemeanor.
The district attorney said an indictment would be ready on Friday.
Bowen faces arraignment on Monday.
