Fire in abandoned house frequented by homeless

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Police have been called to the scene of a fire in an abandoned home.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 2355 F St. at 1:15 p.m. and got the fire under control within in minutes.

No one was in the house when firefighters arrived. Neighbors said the home has been vacant for years, and that homeless people reguarly slept there.

As firefighters investigated the aftermath of the fire, they called in police for assistance.

Investigators said they found evidence of people living illegally in the house. Fire Marshals and Springfield Police are continuing their investigation.

Initial damage estimates of $10,000 due to fire and smoke.
