Passenger killed when pickup hits tree

ELKTON, Ore. - A 26-year-old man died when the pickup he was riding in went off the road and crashed head-on into a tree Wednesday afternoon, Oregon State Police said.

Jorge Armando Torres Torres, 26, of Independence died at the scene 5 miles west of Elkton. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

The crash happened just after 4:30 p.m. as Jose Rafael Hernandez-Diaz drove eastbound on Highway 36 in a 1997 Ford Ranger pickup with Torres Torres in the passenger seat.

A Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputy witnessed the pickup go off the road and crash into a tree. The deputy called for medical assistance and state police.

Hernandez-Diaz was taken by air ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield. He was using a seat belt, police said.
