EUGENE, Ore. - Families lined up as early as 4 a.m. in the rain Thursday to get their hands on free school supplies from St. Vincent de Paul.

"It's an amazing thing because there are a lot of people in need right now," said parent Tina Land.

"This event is completely awesome," said Kaitlyn Mentzer. "It helps 110 percent."

From backpacks and notebooks to pencils and crayons, St. Vincent de Paul said the goal was providing students with the tools they need to succeed.

"For the parents trying to afford not only school supplies but the school fees and the clothing and everything else, it could be very traumatic, especially if you have a large family," Carmen Peer with St. Vincent de Paul said.

Parents weren't the only ones excited about the giveaway.

"My kids were pretty depressed until today," said Amy Redfeather. "They seem to be getting excited."
