Facing record low temps, demand for warming centers heats up

EUGENE, Ore. - With forecast low temperatures in the teens this week, warming centers are preparing to be open through the weekend, if necessary.

The shelter in Cottage Grove has already announced plans to be open through Saturday - and possibly Sunday.

The Egan Warming Centers in Eugene will open Tuesday night, and organizers are preparing for the possibility they will need to open the rest of the week as temperatures threaten to set new record low temperatures.

The Egan locations are:
 

  • First Christian Church, 1166 Oak Street, Eugene
  • Valley Covenant Church, 3636 W.18th St., Eugene (18th & Bailey Hill)
  • Ebbert Memorial Methodist Church, 532 C Street, Springfield
  • Trinity United Methodist Church, 440 Maxwell, Eugene
  • Unaccompanied Youth under 18 years old can got to Hosea Youth Services,  834 Monroe Street, Eugene (Youth Site)


Cottage Grove

Cottage Grove's Beds for Freezing Nights Coalition said its warming center will be open Tuesday, Dec. 3 through Saturday, Dec. 6, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. for adults and families who wish to come inside from the cold.

On Tuesday thru Friday the warming center will be at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church located at 1025 N. 19th Street in Cottage Grove, on the corner of Harvey Road & North 19th.
 
On Saturday and possibly Sunday, the warming center will be at Cottage Grove's First Presbyterian Church on the corner of Adams Avenue and South Third Street.
 
The shelter will remain open on consecutive evenings after Saturday, Dec 7, IF the overnight temperature is predicted to be 29 degrees or less.

If no guests check in by 10 p.m. the shelter will close for that night.

The Cottage Grove shelter does not allow unaccompanied minors, who are referred to the Looking Glass Host Home Program.

Pets are not allowed at the Catholic Church. Forest Valley Veterinary Clinic offers free overnight boarding. Call (541) 942-9132. Pets will be allowed at First Presbyterian Church.

There is free transportation to the Cottage Grove warming shelter from 6:45 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays from South Lane Wheels meal sites. On Friday and Saturday, you can get a ride from City Hall. Check in with police dispatch to reserve a ride.
