EUGENE, Ore. - A police officer who sexually abused or harassed women while both on-duty and off pleaded guilty Wednesday to misdemeanor charges involving 6 women, law enforcement officials said.
Stefan Nicholas Zeltvay, 44, started with the Eugene Police Department in September 1995.
He was placed on administrative leave in December and has since resigned from the department, police said.
The former police officer pleaded guilty Wednesday to 5 counts of sexual harassment and 1 count of third degree sex abuse on Wednesday. He was sentenced to 140 days in jail.
Eugene Police got a possible criminal complaint about Zeltvay on July 10, 2012. During the criminal investigation, EPD learned of other possible criminal acts by Zeltvay and began investigating those, police said. The findings were forwarded to the District Attorney.
The criminal investigation identified a number of women who were sexually abused or sexually harassed by Zeltvay over a number of years, police said.
The incidents of abuse happened while Zeltvay was on-duty and off-duty, during social functions and on personal time, police said.
The criminal behavior involved inappropriate comments and offensive and sexual touching, police said.
"In this case, the reporting parties were spouses of police officers and other police employees," said Sgt. Scott McKee with the Eugene Police.
One of those women is Officer Kara Williams, who wanted to talk to the media about what happened.
"After speaking with Sgt. McKee and telling him my experiences, and thinking about the other women that had come forward and the possibility of additional victims, I knew that it was the right thing to do and that's why I decided to press charges," Williams said.
Williams said she is satisfied with the 140 day jail sentence for Zeltvay.
Police Chief Pete Kerns wants to know if any other women had problems with Zeltvay.
"I'm worried that there may be other victims," Kerns said.
Eugene Police wants to hear from anyone else who may have had inappropriate contact with Zeltvay. You can call Eugene Police Sgt. Scott McKee (541) 682-5144 or the Police Auditor at (541) 682-5016.
Eugene Police hired Zeltvay as a police officer on September 18, 1995. He worked as a patrol officer and on the rapid deployment unit. He had been School Resource Team since August 2003.
