YACHATS, Ore. -- A 75-year-old man was hit and killed by a teenage driver while crossing Highway 101 Friday afternoon about a half mile north of Yachats, state police said.

Officials said David Redetzke, 75 of Yachats, started walking across Hwy 101 at around 4:45 p.m. after leaving his house, which is located on the east side of the highway.

Redetzke was hit in the southbound lane by a 17-year-old from Waldport. Emergency crews pronounced Redetzke dead at the scene.

The teenager was not hurt in the crash and police said he has been cooperative with their investigation.

There is no marked crosswalk near the scene of the crash.

Traffic was cut to one lane in the area for over 4 hours while police worked the crash scene.
