Camper falls to his death at reservoir

ALBANY, Ore. - Divers worked late into the night recovering the body of a 19-year-old man who fell to his death Friday night camping near Green Peter Reservoir, the Linn County Sheriff's Office said.

Michael David Staab of Silverton pitched camp on Quartzville Road on Friday afternoon with an 18-year-old female companion from Corvallis, the sheriff said.

Dispatchers got a 911 call after 11 p.m. Friday night reporting Staab had fallen down a steep hillside into the water.

Staab was last seen standing near the edge of the embankment by his companion. She walked from the tent and firepit to the car; when she turned around, Staab was gone, the sheriff said.

Rescue boats from the Benton County Sheriff's Office, Sweet Home Fire Department and the Linn County Sheriff's Office responded.

Rescue divers found Staab's body in Green Peter Reservoir around 1 a.m. in about 35 feet of water, 50 feet off shore.
