EUGENE, Ore. -- Home renovations can be expensive, but Lane County residents got the chance to scoop up some cheap deals at the15th annual Builder’s Garage Sale.
From doors and drywall to toilets and tubs, the sale gave new purpose to all kinds of old or unused building supplies.
“It's enjoyable because it fit the needs that we have,” said Willie Mims, one of the thousands who came out to the Lane Events Center for the sale. “We're doing home improvements which won't start ‘til summer, but right now we're gathering all the materials that we need for the project.”
Ed McMahon of the Home Builders Association of Lane County said 20 percent of the money made at the event goes to St. Vincent de Paul’s Veteran Housing Project.
“What we have are homes that we can rent to (veterans) for $500 a month for a two-year period to help them get settled in the community,” said McMahon.
The Veterans Housing Program already has 6 homes in the area. The Home Builders Association raised more than $100,000 for the program in the 15 years of the sale.
