Boy, 14, dies after crashing bicycle into side of semi-trailer
Police said the teen's speed on his bicycle coming down hill and failure to stop at the intersection contributed to the fatal crash

BURNS, Ore. - A 14-year-old boy riding downhill on a bicycle died when he went through a stop sign and hit the side of a semi-trailer Wednesday afternoon, Oregon State Police said.

Police identified the victim as Jonathan "JP" Ptacek of Burns.

Ptacek was riding downhill on West B Street in Burns around 3 p.m. Wednesday. As he approached the stop sign at the intersection with Highway 20, he didn't stop. He hit the side of a semi-trailer and then was run over by the trailer's wheels.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Harney District Hospital and then taken by AirLink air ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, where he was pronounced deceased after arrival.

The trucker from Homedale, Idaho, stopped when he saw the victim lying injured in the roadway in his rearview mirror. The trucker cooperated with police, and investigators said there is no indication he is at fault.
