Bomb squad called out for 'suspicious device' in Cottage Grove

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- The Eugene Police Bomb Squad was called out to a Cottage Grove neighborhood Saturday morning after residents reported finding a suspicious device made out of a pipe laying in the street.

Officers responded to 3rd St. and Jefferson Ave. at around 10 a.m. Saturday to find what looked like a homemade explosive device, Cottage Grove Police said.

After securing the scene, officials asked the Eugene Police Department's Bomb Squad to come help dispose of the device.

Bomb squad technicians used a capped detonator to "render the device safe". The detonator, which uses an explosive charge, is used to trigger potential explosives.

Officials said they weren't sure if the pipe-like device was an actual explosive, but added that they are continuing their investigation
