EUGENE, Ore. -- Tailgaters at Saturday’s match-up between Oregon and Cal said that the rain, if it ever came, wouldn’t dampen their gameday.
Many of the Duck-faithful were quick to remind newcomers that "it never rains in Autzen Stadium."
With the first significant storm of fall on the horizon, that saying was put to the test.
UO’s Senior Associate Athletic Director Craig Pintens said the phrase was coined back in the early 90’s when umbrellas were banned from the stadium.
“All I know is that it never rains in Autzen Stadium. It might be raining everywhere else, but when you're at Autzen, it doesn't rain,” Pintens said.
Many of the fans who gathered in the stadium parking lot to start their game celebration early.
"Every home game it will never rain. It's beautiful. If it's windy its OK!" die-hard Duck Kalyssa Lewis said.
“This is good weather in Oregon… when it's just raining and cloudy and stormin',” said Dave Burnett. “Anywhere else this is hard to play in that weather, but not at Autzen Stadium."
"Cal isn't coming in here to win today… it's duck weather! We're gonna win!” said Angela ‘mama duck’ Rowson.
So while the National Weather Service forecast 1 to 2 inches of rain overnight, one place fans can expect to keep their feathers dry is inside the walls of Autzen Stadium.
