Police: Criminal investigation opened into man's death

EUGENE, Ore. - The death of a man found at his home Monday is being investigated as a crime, police said Thursday.

Eugene Police identified the deceased as Russell Lee Penn, 61. Officers found Penn dead at his Archie Street home in West Eugene on Monday.

Police said they withheld Penn's name while notifying his family. Other details and investigation about the case are not yet available, police said.

Penn played guitar in bands, according to his Facebook page. His page features many photographs of or by Penn at the Oregon Country Fair or shows by Furthur, which includes members of the Grateful Dead; and Dark Star Orchestra, a Grateful Dead tribute band. There are also photos of Penn with Northwest blues legend Curtis Salgado, as well as Penn at the grave of Robert Johnson.

There are also nature photos, including shots of Eagle Cap mountain in the Eagle Cap Wilderness of northeastern Oregon.
