EUGENE, Ore. -- A security guard shot a man who was trying to rob an armored transport car with a can of mace and a screwdriver Saturday afternoon while it was parked outside of the Albertson's store in North Eugene, police officials said.
Eugene Police said the suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound; both security guards inside the armored transport vehicle were unharmed.
Sgt. Ron Tinseth said officers responded to reports of a robbery near 60 Division Ave. just after 3:40 p.m. Saturday.
Investigators say a man armed with pepper spray and a screwdriver tried to rob an armored car outside of the Albertson's store off of River Road.
One of the security guards fired three shots and hit the suspect, officials said.
Sgt. Tinseth said the suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment. Police are still unsure of the suspect's condition.
The driver of the armored transport vehicle drove across Division Ave. before calling law enforcement to make sure they were parked in a safe place, Eugene Police spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin said.
This is a developing story, updates will be posted as they come in.
