UPDATE: Eugene Police connected the victim found in a house fire early Wednesday morning to a crime spree that claimed the life of the suspect and a California sheriff's deputy.

EUGENE, Ore. - Firefighters found a body while responding to a house fire early Wednesday morning.

Eugene-Springfield Fire responded to a house fire in the 2000 block of Elk Avenue at 12:36 a.m. Wednesday.

While fighting the fire, crews located a person dead in the home. Police officers responded along with firefighters and posted red "crime scene" tape around the home.

Eugene Police later said the victim, 79-year-old retired University of Oregon Professor George Wasson, had been shot to death.

Forensic investigators and detectives remained on scene through the day with fire officials and police.
