2013 beats 1944 for title of driest year on record for Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. - As the clock struck midnight and Eugene welcomed 1945, weather watchers closed the books on the driest year on record: only 23.26 inches of rain fell in all of 1944, beating the previous record dry year of 1908 by more than 3 inches.

The record stood for almost 70 years - until 2013.

As the southern Willamette Valley cries "Happy New Year!" and welcomes 2014, the year 2013 will claim the crown for driest year on record in Eugene. Only 21.19 inches of rain fell all year - nearly a third of it during what was the soggiest September on record.

That's a new record by more than 2 inches, and only 46 percent of average.
