1 dead, 1 hurt after Jeep lands upsidedown in river

TILLAMOOK, Ore. - Two anglers who heard a crash and went to investigate found a Jeep upsidedown in the Wilson River with only its tires above water.

The anglers called 911 and helped at the scene while the driver got out of the vehicle Sunday morning, Oregon State Police said.

The passenger died later at the hospital.

According to state police, Juan Getcemani de la Torre, 23, of Tillamook was westbound on Highway 6 in a 2010 Jeep Patriot when the SUV went off the road, hit a tree and rolled down the hillside into the Wilson River.

The driver was taken by ambulance to Tillamook Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Passenger Atilano Vargas Sanchez, 43, from Tillamook was transported by ambulance to Tillamook Regional Medical Center where he later died as a result of the crash. The cause of death is pending, state police said.
