The last time the Oregon Ducks won the Rose Bowl, on January 1st, 1917

 

 

*It was the 3rd Rose Bowl (this will be the 98th).

 

*The Rose Bowl stadium would not be built for another five years (it hosted its first Rose Bowl on January 1st, 1923).  The "Webfeet" played the University of Pennsylvania in Pasadena's Tournament Park, winning 14-0.

 

*The United States would not enter World War I for three more months (April 6th).

 

*The Chicago Cubs last World Series win came eight years previously (1908).

 

*The NFL did not exist.

 

*Babe Ruth still played for the Boston Red Sox (he was traded to the Yankees in 1920).

 

*John F. Kennedy had not been born. (May 29th 1917)

 

*Bill Bowerman was 5 years old (born February 19th, 1911).

 

*Oregon’s head basketball AND football AND baseball coach was Hugo Bezdek. He was also a scout for the major league Pittsburgh Pirates… who hired him to be their manager in mid-1917, forcing the Webfeet to find three replacements.

 

*Howe Field, currently home to the Oregon softball team, would not be built for 19 years (1936), and would be a baseball-only stadium for 51 years (converted to softball in 1987).

 

*McArthur Court would not be built for 9 more years (it opened January, 1927).

 

*Bill Hayward was entering his 14th year as Oregon head track coach (he coached from 1904-1947).  (He was also Bezdek’s replacement as basketball coach… as well as his predecessor).

 

*Hayward Field would not be built for two more years… and it would open as a football only stadium in 1919.  It would not host its first track event until 1921.

 

*The first college football game broadcast over the radio would not happen for four more years (October 8th, 1921, the University of Pittsburgh beat West Virginia).

 

*Legendary Oregon State basketball head coach “Slats” Gill was still in Salem high school.  He would not attend “Oregon Agricultural College” for two more years.

 

*Legendary Oregon State basketball head coach Ralph Miller would not be born for two more years.

 

*The Empire State Building would not be built for 14 more years (1931).

 

*The Golden Gate Bridge would not open for 20 more years (1937).

 

*Comedian/actor George Burns, who lived to be 100 years old, was 19 days away from his 21st birthday (he was born January 20th, 1896).
