Springfield (KMTR) - River Roofing Inc. of Springfield is at it again, with their "Nominate a Neighbor in Need" campaign. It’s a local solution for families with roofing problems but no money to pay for a new roof.
The company, along with Allied Building Products and Owens Corning, looked at dozens of nominations and ultimately chose two homeowners in desperate need of new roofs; a couple in Cottage Grove, and a single mom in Eugene.
River Roofing owner Steve Davey says it was tough to choose the families, but an easy decision to help.
“This year was even harder than last year, so we picked two,” Davey said. “And next year we're going to try to do three. The community’s supported us for ages; let's give a little bit back.”
One of the winners, Tracy McCoy was working as an emergency room nurse several years ago, when a patient stuck her with a contaminated needle. She took medication which broke down her immune system. Now she has limited muscle function and cannot work.
McCoy says she’s extremely grateful for the gift.
“It's just awesome. It just makes me feel like there's hope, in that it's not so bad you can't make it through. And it's going to let us be able to stay here,” she said.
In addition to her home’s worn out roof, her heating and cooling system just shut down. McCoy had been using tarps to cover leaks that ruined the furniture in her home and her son couldn't sleep in his bedroom because the rotted wood attracted ants.
