EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) -- As the University of Oregon is ushering in a new president with the hiring of Dr. Michael Gottfredson, students are shuffling out of the residence halls for the summer and leaving behind thousands of dollars in donations.
Volunteers with Springfield Public Schools’ “Brattain House” have spent the last few days packing trucks full of items donated by students as they move out of the residence halls. The donation collection has been happening for the last 12 years.
The donations will go to the Brattain House’s services, which help homeless and financially challenged students and families in Springfield and eastern Lane County.
Friday, June 15th, 2012, volunteers filled two medium sized moving trucks full of donated items including clothing, furniture, electronics, non-perishable food and more.
“We're able to give it to a family that maybe all they're living on is their food stamps and a little bit of cash they get for their unemployment, they can save to try to get back in to housing,” says Janet Beckman, Homeless Liason for Springfield Public Schools.
In all, volunteer have filled more than 3 and a half truck loads full of donations. The items will be handed out in August during the Brattain House's "back to school" giveaway.
