TrackTown 2012 Festival gearing up for mega fun
EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) -- With less than a week to go until the Olympic Track & Field Trials in Eugene, things are coming together near Hayward Field as crews set the stage for the TrackTown 2012 Festival. Organizers say this year's festival will be more than double the size of Eugene '08. The festival will be located to the left of the UO Student Rec Center, right next door to Hayward Field.The work in the Rec Center soccer fields behind Hayward Field is enormous as well. Crews aren’t so much pitching tents as they are building a miniature city. Contractors are erecting full-blown structures with wooden frames, floors and plastic skins.One of the largest areas belongs to Nike, which will be selling gear at the festival. Dozens of crates full of furniture and supplies were brought in on Friday, June 15th. A large picnic pavilion belongs to Safeway, with the company bringing in woodworkers to build picnic benches and tables inside.The largest project by far is the main stage, which will host several musical acts over the multi-day event. The whole venue has been custom-built to create a unique blowout event.“Something that could sit in a home for years and years and years we're building out here just to be temporary because we want to have . . . people to have that great experience,” says Tony Fisher, Senior Operations Manager for SportsOne, the Beaverton-based marketing company that’s in charge of putting the festival area together.“Not only years of planning, but it's just awesome to see the transition we've had from 2008 to 2012 . . . They thought they were blown away in '08 -they're going to blow the socks off in 2012,” says Fisher.Multiple food areas will also be in and around festival location, including the TrackTown Café, the Deschutes Brewery pub and a London-inspired pub.Burning off the calories, Safeway has also brought in full-size fitness wheels that will give people a chance to run, create electricity and charge their own cell phone and electronics by way of people power.Off the Rec Center soccer fields will also be a mega block party, lined with smaller Saturday Market-style vendor tents along 15th Avenue and Agate Street.
