SWEET HOME, Ore. (KMTR) -- Sweet Home School District policy clearly states that staff members with concealed carry licenses can bring firearms on campus.

The district says they it hasn't been approached by teachers about the policy. Instead, it was the parents of students calling to ask if it was allowed and it comes on the hees of the tragedy in Connecticut.

"If it causes a disruption in the educational process, obviously we need to take a look at it. Then I'm sure our board would look at our policy, but at this point it hasn't,” said Sweet Home School District Superintendent Don Schrader.

Schrader said he doesn't want to be the superintendent that is arming the staff, he is just following policy. Parents we spoke with like the idea of teachers arming themselves and say they feel safer knowing their kids are protected.

"It makes me feel safe as a parent knowing that if someone walked in to cause harm, that my child would be safe and the teacher would save my child or other peoples' children," said Sweet Home parent Crystal Duncan.

We spoke with people and business owners in Sweet Home, all of which supported teachers arming themselves in the classroom.

Finally a school district with common sense!! I completely approve of this! If the teachers are properly trained and know how to properly keep it concealed with the proper licensing, it is a great idea!! A gun free school zone is unnecessarily dangerous!! If some think the teachers don't need to be armed, than we need to have armed security at the schools!! We protect our money and our president with armed security, if I'm not mistaken, our kids, the future of our nation, needs to be protected just like our money and our president is!! Let's wake up here people, look at the facts, violent crime goes down when guns are in the hands of good people!! Criminals are criminals, they are going to break the laws no matter what, if we implement more gun control our law abiding citizens will listen and our criminals will still be armed, in turn, violent crime goes back up! Way to go Sweethome! You are an example for many!!

Sounds like the Sweet Home School District believes in the 2nd Amendment. You can't defend yourself with sticks and stones against an armed individual that's twisted mind is bent on doing harm. Being a kid or not. So how many kids, through one means or another, get some car keys and take a joy ride? Maybe it would be a good idea to ban or restrict the use of cars. I dont think so. But I do think a small number of accidents will happen, like joy rides. I just think, as adults, we need to me more aware, responsible, and accountable of our decisions and actions. Including the safety of a classroom full of unarmed and defenseless kids. Way to go, Sweet Home. Keep your kids safe.

That's unnecessarily dangerous. The chance that some gunman would enter is far lower than the chance of an accidental discharge or accidentally leaving a gun where kids can get it. And what if the "gunman" is a small kid who brings the gun to class? Will the teacher shoot the kid? Examples of conceal carry owners leaving their gun where kids can get them in schools: http://kidshootings.blogspot.com/2012/10/concealed-firearms-carrier-leaves-gun.html http://kidshootings.blogspot.com/2013/01/armed-guard-in-michigan-school-leaves.html http://salem.katu.com/news/parents-kids/443071-update-no-sign-school-security-guards-missing-gun

Finally a school district with some good common sense. It takes a good guy with a gun to deal with a bad guy with a gun. That's why police carry firearms. Help me help you. Ask yourself this: when your loved one calls to tell you that an armed subject has kicked in the door, which would you prefer them to have, a gun or a cell phone? Signed, Another Sheepdog
