EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — The mayor of Springfield has asked state elections officials to end an inquiry into an alleged campaign violation and determine a penalty.

Springfield Mayor Sid Leiken sent a letter to the Oregon Elections Division received Monday admitting he inadequately documented the $2,000 he withdrew from his mayoral campaign committee to pay his mother for polling services.

Democrats filed a complaint a month after Leiken entered the race for the congressional seat held by Democratic U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio.

At issue is Leiken's transfer of $2,000 from his mayoral candidate committee fund to his own consulting business to pay his mother for a poll. Oregon law forbids candidates from personally profiting from their campaign spending.

Elections officials are considering Leiken's request.
