EUGENE, Ore. (AP, KMTR) – Lane County Sheriff's Office detectives are now looking into a 2005 double murder that might be linked to an Alaskan serial killer who recently committed suicide.
Israel Keyes, 34, died in an Anchorage, Alaska jail last weekend while awaiting trial in the state.
An FBI timeline now show Keyes was in Washington state and British Columbia in April 2005, three months before two teachers were found slain near their campsite in Oregon's Willamette National Forest.
54-year-old Stevan Haugen and his girlfriend 56-year-old Jeanette Bauman were killed in the attack that happened near Oakridge. CrimeStoppers of Southern Oregon recently featured the two victims on a deck of cold case playing cards. The cards were released in the last year, designed to help get more information out about old, unsolved murders.
The Oregonian reports that the Lane County Sheriff's will now compare notes with FBI agents who are investigating Keyes' crimes.
In the week leading up to his death, Keyes confessed to eight murders across the country before committing suicide. Authorities know the identities of three victims but say Keyes didn't provide names or details of the other five.
