EUGENE, OR (KMTR) -- More than one Oregon sheriff has sent letters to Vice President Joe Biden stating opposition to recent gun control talk. Lane County Sheriff Turner says he will not follow suit.

January 17, 2013

To Lane County Residents:

The Sandy Hook shooting has prompted many recent discussions regarding gun control in the United States.  Our own state of Oregon suffered a shooting at Clackamas Town Center in the Portland area last December and many of us remember with great clarity the murder of Officer Chris Kilcullen in April of 2011, and the Thurston High School shooting that occurred over a decade ago, killing four and injuring more than 20.

In response to Lane County residents’ many inquiries, I wanted to provide you with my stance on the issue.

As the Sheriff of Lane County, I have taken an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the laws of the State of Oregon.  I have upheld that oath for 31 years as a law enforcement officer in our community.  While I understand the sense of urgency on behalf of citizens, I believe that any reaction, decision or response to issues that impact the rights of all people should be done so without haste and after careful consideration.  Ultimately it is the Supreme Court, not any individual, that determines the constitutionality of any law.

As a member of the law enforcement community, I am supportive of our lawmakers evaluating the recent tragedies and engaging in discussions on how we can avoid the loss of more lives in the future.  It would be irresponsible if we didn’t consider ways in which to make our Country safer.  As law enforcement providers, we are tasked with conserving the peace and ensuring preservation of life.

As the details of the President's proposal emerge over the coming days, there will be many discussions on whether improvements can be made to increase public safety while upholding the Constitution and following the laws of our Country.

I remain committed to the preservation of the law, to the protection of life, and to you as residents of Lane County.  We will continue to work together as a country, and as a county, to make our home a safer place to live.

Our primary focus here in Lane County needs to be on strengthening our failing public safety system.  We must continue to work together to make Lane County a safer place to live.  As your Sheriff, I ask for your support.

Sincerely,

Thomas M. Turner

Sheriff

Either do your job you were elected to do: stand up to protecting us Lane County people from the federal agents encroaching on our rights, or: hand in your badge. Simple as that.

There is nothing in the Constitution in reference to using firearms to exclusively hunt. So stop with the 'You don't need 30 rounds to shoot an elk' argument. This is the land of the free. That includes freedoms to partake in hobbies including shooting sports. Consider this argument in reference to magazine capacity: A CHEVY CORVETTE BAN. Speeding is the #1 killer of persons in vehicle collisions. Who needs to travel 150 mph on a public highway? Isn't there already a ... SPEED LIMIT? Yet many continue to perish or get seriously injured. In a population of sheep there is a government of wolves. Signed, A Sheepdog

Per Sheriff Turner: "I believe that any reaction, decision or response to issue that impact the rights of all people should be done so without hast and carefull consideration" I guess Sheriff Turner feels the President has acted in haste because in less than 30 days there are 23 executitive orders. All the fellow Sheriffs did was react to the executitive orders the President is putting into place that infring on citizens rights. In other words they took a stand because the law of the land is the 2nd amendment. So Sheriff Turner if the people have the right to bear arms, which the SCOTUS has up held in heller vs SC, Will you back up the citizens of Lane county if a federal enforcement officer comes to confisciate the firearms? Simple answer yes or no?

I can only guess this Sheriff doesn't what to be judged for out right talking a stand on the gun issue. He doesn't have to worry, releasing dozens of high threat criminals everyday has already formed my opinion. Yes, yes the budget. Go get some advice from Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Balderdash,You are full of it, happy with your 6wks. vacations, no thanks for taking jail beds away and putting everybody at risk. I don't want to hear you say it's out of your control, you and your cronies.

@baldr, take your pathetic gun agenda and stuff it. Th only thing this fat ass sheriff supports is eating donuts and isnt it funny that his deputies have been investigated for more acts of violence than any other dept. He cant even manage a budget. Eliminate them from patrol duties and pay the state to patrol.

Sheriff Turner, I am very disappointed in you not stepping forward and clearly stating to what Nth degree you would/wouldn’t protect your citizens from being made to be criminals by a dictatorship (in style of our President). You stepped forward about 8 steps where 10 are required to make it crystal clear, your support and protection of your citizens that elected you. Take a look at the letters the Sheriffs of Linn, Crook, and Douglas County created. That is precisely what I am talking about. The way you side stepped those lasts two steps forward, does not make me confident that you’re on the Constitutions side, but rather a politicking side placing of yourself to be FULLY AND STERNLY posted between tyranny and your OATH OF OFFICE and not totally on the side of your public you swore to protect. I recognize the power of the Sheriff’s Office, as in the hierarchy of all USA law enforcement offices. To include local police, Sheriff, State Police, US Marshall, CIA, FBI, Secret Service and Presidential Personal Armed Guards. Please step forward and let your public know your true/deepest convictions. I/we will wait to hear your next move, or lack of clarification. Kindly, Jim Wirth

Thank you, Sheriff Turner. Yours is a voice of reason. We all need to work together to reduce gun violence, which has increased every year for at least the last four years here in the Eugene / Springfield area.
