EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) -- At least twenty staff members from Lane Community College gathered this afternoon to celebrate the move to the new downtown campus and they did it in Olympic fashion.

Each faculty member walked with a carpet square from the old building, then passed it to another faculty member. The walk started on Willamette and ended at West Tenth Street. The square was then placed into a time capsule. The time capsule was filled with memorabilia such as a hand-written letter from Congressman Peter Defazio and some frozen Twinkies.

Staff members were thrilled to see how well the community came together.

"We were fortunate enough to build a new building that the community help make possible, so this is definitely a community thing,” said event coordinator Eline Eiler-Mough.

The capsule was buried around one o'clock this afternoon and will not be re-opened until 2064.

The official grand opening of the new campus will be March 15.
