EUGENE, Ore. -- (KMTR) Most of the flu making its way around Oregon has been Type A, which matches this year's vaccine. There is still time to get vaccinated, but where? Local Walgreens, Albertsons and Rite Aids are completely out. Wal-mart says they stopped giving vaccines in October. The Target on West 11th has less than 30 doses left. Urgent Care on Coburg Road has more than one thousand doses left, but they are going fast. Urgent Care says they served 200 people yesterday, which is unheard of. These numbers increase as people hear that the flu is going around.
“A lot of people don't think about it. They were either busy or haven't read anything about it. So they forgot, now the epidemic brings them flying in. It takes about two weeks for the immunization to give you some protection," said Mitch Boriskin who is a Family Nurse Practitioner at Eugene Urgent Care.
He says to wash your hands often and avoid contact with people who are heavy coughers. The Oregon Health Authority says more than one point one million doses of the flu vaccine were shipped to Oregon this year and more than 700,000 have been given out. He also says it's smart to keep hand sanitizer handy and use it often. Flu shots don't cost too much, without insurance you’ll pay about $20. If you have insurance it’s free.
