Goshen (KMTR) - More than 30 firefighters came to the rescue of a draft horse in Goshen Tuesday evening; 27-year-old Katie Sue had fallen into a well. Her owners call it a truly amazing rescue.
Fire and EMS crews from all over Lane County responded to the ranch where Katie Sue was stuck. They used a backhoe and fire hoses to hoist her above ground. It took several hours to dig out the well, and pull Katie up safely. A vet on the scene gave her a sedative to calm the nerves in all the commotion. A few hours after the rescue, her muscles were still very weak, and Katie Sue got stuck in some mud. Crews came right back and saved her again.
Wednesday, the horse is doing just fine. She has a few scrapes, but no broken bones. How Katie Sue fell in the well is still a bit of a mystery. It's not in use anymore, and was covered with plywood. Moss and berries had grown over it, so her owners think Katie Sue was probably grazing in the area and took a wrong step.
Most of the firefighters on the scene overnight are volunteers who gave up some sleep over the holiday to rescue Katie Sue. Her owners say they're forever grateful for their efforts.
