EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) -- Fundraiser held Saturday by ex-Lane County Jail inmates a success for injured Lane County deputy and his wife.

Streets food cart raised more than $1,800 for Drew and Michelle Wattier on Saturday, January 12. The couple was hurt in a hit-and-run crash in Mexico in last November.

The food cart is run by Juston Swan and other reformed inmates. Many of them met Drew when they were in custody at the Lane County Jail.

Now Streets is hoping the cash raised will help Drew and Michelle recover. So many customers showed up Saturday that the cart actually ran out of food.

“All of us are on . . . [We] need help at different times and the people that are sometimes in jail need help and then it switches around and the police officer and his wife need help,” says Clarence Townsend, a participant in the fundraiser on Saturday.

Drew and Michelle are now together at the same long-term recovery facility in Oregon. Both are awake and speaking a few words, but still have limited speech and motor functions.
