TYGH VALLEY, Ore. (KMTR) -- Two people drowned Monday afternoon after falling into White River Falls just near Tygh Valley in north central Oregon.

The pair was trying to walk behind the falls to take a photo when they slipped into the pool below, according to the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office. Witnesses tried to rescue them, but were not able to get to them before the pair disappeared underwater. Their bodies have not been recovered.

The sheriff’s office has yet to release the identities of the victims. A Facebook message from the River Rock Church in Camas WA asked parishioners for their prayers after a boy in their church and a camp youth leader drowned.

The River Rock Church held a prayer meeting Monday night.

The day use area of the falls was closed Tuesday.
