Convicted felon arrested with AR 15 assault rifle after alleged threat

EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) -- Eugene Police Detectives teamed up with Lane County Parole & Probation (P & P) officers to arrest Scott Alan Gorman, age 45 of Eugene, after he made threats toward a local adult care facility.

After receiving threats from Scott Gorman about his displeasure with services being provided to a family member, staff at a local adult care facility was alarmed enough to contact local police. Gorman, who is currently on felony probation for Unlawful Use of a Weapon, received a visit from his probation officer. The probation officer arrested Gorman for multiple violations of the terms of his probation.

Upon speaking with other residents at Gorman's home, the probation officer became convinced that Gorman had weapons in his home. Two Eugene Police Property Crimes detectives responded to P & P's request for assistance. Police talked with Gorman and received his consent to retrieve firearms from his home.

Seized were an AR-15 assault rifle loaded with a thirty-round magazine, set to 'fire', with four additional loaded thirty-round magazines and two other firearms.

Information regarding the name and location of the adult care facility will not be released.

Currently, investigators are trying to determine from whom Gorman was able to purchase the AR-15 assault rifle If you have any pertinent information regarding this case, please contact Detective Chris White at 541 682.5376.

Gorman is being held at the Lane County Jail on Probation Violation and three counts of Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

I hope that they find the person that provided the weapon to this felon. They should lose their right to keep and bare arm also. We need to do something to stop the misuse of firearms in America.

And how did he get his assault rifle despite being a felon? Easy. In Oregon and most of the rest of the USA, you don't need a background check, ID, or any questions asked to purchase a gun in a private sale. Some 40% of guns used in crimes get to criminals that way. It's time to demand a background check for ALL gun sales, which will force criminals to get a knowing accomplice for a gun sale and drastically increase the price they'd have to pay, both of which will reduce their ability to buy.

All sarcasm aside. Please, protect yourselves. As much as I'd like to get there and save you, odds are I can't. Look at the recent activity across the US, Georgia mother with twins and Houston 15 year old protecting himself and sister. Signed, Another Sheepdog.

I believe we have the right to bare arms. However, this particular story is not about the right to bare arms, it is about diverting a catastrophe. Granted one can't prevent firearms from being purchased, but people can be proactive in reporting concerns early before it becomes a bigger problem. Furthermore, it is about citizens protecting themselves and taking the extra step to report concerns when a convicted felon makes stupid comments that he has a concealed weapons permit during a ranting about someone he doesn't agree with (as reported in the Register Guard this morning). Whether he was blowing of steam, being a story teller, or he was serious, kudos to this facility for reporting their concerns. He obviously was disturbed and ready to kill. No telling what he would have done, at least something catastrophic was prevented. Better to be cautious than to ignore someones ranting. The facility should be praised for their efforts in protecting the community from this felon. Imagine the criticism the facility would have been under if they had not reported it and he actually did do something stupid. Praying he isn't released out of the system before his trial and that justice is served!

Do you really need a shotgun and 8 rounds specifically designed two shred soft tissue via nine ball projectiles at once to create dramatic wound channels to stop Joe or Jane meth head from stealing your TV? My 9mmis more than adequate for that! See where this is going?

Do you really need a military type rifle “I’m NOT calling it an assault rifle, because you all are stuck on the fact it does not have a select fire lever” and 30 rounds of ammunition specifically designed to yaw upon entering soft tissue and create dramatic wound channels to stop Joe or Jane meth head from stealing your T.V.? My Mossberg 500 persuader is more than adequate for that! The second amendment does grant you “the right to keep and bear arms”, FINE, keep and bear all the arms you want! NOT just ANY arms you want. Your rights are already infringed by not being allowed to have that select fire lever on your rifle. AND, that lever does not in any way affect the performance of the weapon OR its cartridge. The real advantage and deadly capabilities of the weapon come during rapid, multiple, single fire use without reloading. Just as the latest shooters have used them.

That's good odds to be killed by a gun, when there shouldn't be any statistic for being, shot or disfirgured. There is no need for rapidily repeating guns in the everyday Joes hands, you make a mess of your prey to eat if you used 'em. There evidently too many unstable individuals in the world to handle such an object, everybody can have one if your not a felon or deamed mentally uncapable.

What would I use a Law Enforcement style weapon for? Same thing they would use it for. Homosapiens are history's deadliest and most intelligent predator. So yes, I see a practical purpose for the biggest, baddest gun for protection. If my military-style rifle is overkill for the 2nd Amendment, then so is the internet for the 1st Amendment. Also, The Supreme Court ruled police are not responsible for our individual safety, so if you've put all your eggs in one basket for them to protect you in a time of crisis, you may want look it up and rethink your stance.

What?! You mean the state gun law 'Felon in Possession of a Firearm' didn't stop this criminal from committing this felony? Yes, more gun laws. That's the answer. Disarm the law-abiding public so more innocents can be victimized. The end times are near.

I you are going to show a picture of the gun, then show us a pic of the dirtbag that had the gun. I just wonder how long will he stay in jail since no one wants to cough up the money to keep him where he belongs. On another note, the 2nd amendment says nothing about "sporting arms" but it does talk about keeping the state free. A gun is a tool, it is designed to detonate a given amount of powder and send a projectile down a barrel at whatever the HUMAN operator designates. It could be paper targets, empty pop cans, an attacker with another weapon, etc. It is the human intervention that suddenly makes the inanimate object lethal. More people will die from this recent flu epidemic than assault rifles, I don't see the government scrambling to do anything about that. You have a 1:850,000 chance in getting shot by an assault rifle. Your have a much greater chance of being killed by a hammer or drunk driver.
