EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) - Ralliers protest against idea of guns in schools in Eugene on Saturday to petition for stronger gun laws.

Ceasefire Oregon and Million Mom March among other groups came together to take a stand against gun violence. Today their message was to keep guns out of schools.

The theme of the rally was to promote education among citizens. Advocates, such as Bobbie Cirel of Eugene, said that it is important for everyone to educate themselves about current legislation.

Ceasefire Oregon has a petition to keep guns out of schools. Attendees of the rally had the opportunity to sign the petition. The group is also promoting Oregon voters to contact legislators, especially about House Bill 3200, which would ban assault weapons in Oregon if passed.

Attendees included Eugene mayor Kitty Piercy and other supporters of tighter background checks for gun purchases. Eugene resident Bobbie Cirel says that she supports the second amendment, but she believes there should be more thorough background checks.

"I'm not anti-gun. I'm a proponent of the second amendment. I don't see any reason why law-abiding citizens ought not to have a gun if they choose to have one. But I want to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and out of the hands of folks who are mentally ill," Cirel said.

Other people who do not believe there should be tighter gun control also attended the rally.

"The bad guys are going to get guns whether there's a background check or not, right?" said Doug Sigmann, also a Eugene resident.

Sigmann also said that everyone should be allowed to carry a gun for self-defense purposes.

Advocates of Ceasefire Oregon encourage the community to speak up and to contact representatives in Congress with their opinions.

Ceasefire Oregon's rally was an enormous flop. This collection of misfits have put together an anti-gun nut manifesto even worse than the Obama-Feinstein sabotage job (See HB 3200). One suspects Penny Okamoto and her merry crew would like to disarm the US citizens so that some foreign invader (perhaps Korea or some other oriental country)could make a sneak attack upon our country.

What is not being reported here is that ceasefire Oregon want's to prohibit persons who possess a concealed carry permit from entering Oregon public schools. I challenge them and mayor Peircy to find one isntance where someone holding such a permit did any harm with a gun in any school. If you go to the ceasefire website or check the bill out, you will discover that if passed that about all that will be left for lawful gun owners to possess will be slingshots and muskets.

I'll agree that this nation has an issue with gun violence. Even though guns can't think or act on their own, a lot of naive or self-righteous people think we should ban or restrict them. We also have a problem with drunk drivers. Should we also ban cars? What other inanimate things should we ban? What the law abiding people need to do is calm down and think of a solution for this problem without encroaching on our rights. It's not guns, like cars, that's the issue. It's a people problem. I'm fully against banning guns in schools. Why punish our teachers or staff members that choose to get training and want to protect themselves, or more so, our children. The gun-banning people need to wake up and realize that the guns, magazines, and ammo is all ready out on the streets in mass. Banning anything is only going to hamper the lawful and people that use these items for sporting events. I, for one, will vote against any of our political leaders that attempts to pass any of this nonsense.

So lets see you recognize the freedom of speech but not the right to bear arms, so we picking what part of the constitution we like to live by. If you can see no comparison I suggest you type in constitution on the goggle machine and do a bit of reading. The souther cali officer on a rampage ya think i would have been more worried about the ones looking for him after they shot the heck out of two women in a truck that looked like him, hey I got an idea maybe they shouldn't have guns. The gun in the Bathroom I believe was also a officer hu see previous statement. Maybe ya should pull up some real statistics on Chicago Washington DC, New York, and get the info correct.

The internet is form of freedom of speak, along with television, they are not guns I can see no comparison between them. I stand firmly that the guns of mass distruction should be stopped-AKs. Have you all forgotten KIP KINGLE who got his lawabiding parents guns and blew them and Thurston High students. The law abiding officer in S.CAli. on a rampage, or the officer who left a gun in the bathroom at a church- Quit bring up 23 yrs ago so and so did this. Whatever, seems so fanatical, oops Oscar Pistorious shoots first, another logical gentle being

Justme, so since the modern day rifle is not covered under the 2nd amendment because it didnt exist at the time the constitution was written, does that mean that the 1st amendment doesnt apply to the Internet and Televisions because they didnt exist at the time of the Constitution? The so called "machine gun style" weapons you are talking about are 1 shot per 1 pull of the trigger (that is what semi automatic means). Also please have an honest argument about gun laws. Gun laws only affect people who are prone to obeying the law anyway. Take a look at the city of Chicago which is a beacon of strict gun laws. That city has massive gun crime every year. Please look at the recent testimony of Suzanna Hupp before the Senate as well as her testimony back in 1991 before congress about the gun control laws and how they cost her the lives of her parents.

Balderdash-guess I'm a sissy "communistic" person-ee gad-what the heck era are talking about. You all are so feverent about weapons, I think you're off your rocker and wouldn't trust any of you with having a gun. I believe in the 2nd, but only a rifle or perhaps a handgun-when our fore fathers wrote the constitution they had no idea people would be having machine gun style weapons, it was not even in on their vocabulary.

The US and particularly the "educational establishment" are in a state of hysteria about "gun control" (i.e., people control). If a kindergarten child points a finger and says "bang" he's a potential murderer and gets kicked out of school. Friday in Florida three boys disarmed a teenager who had a pistol on a school bus and had threatened to shoot a "bro." The gun boy went to jail (which is appropriate, of course), and the three boys who disarmed him were expelled for "being involved in a gun issue." Now is that insanity or what?

This is what happens where there is no common sense. Like the criminals would even obey any new laws, are they not breaking the law when they go commit these unthinkable acts of violence. What makes you people think they will obey new laws if you put them on the books I man come on pull your heads out of your behind. Also sounds like Kitty Piercy need to read the oath of office that she probably took much like a few other people in salem. I think they are foregetting about that part uphold the constitution.
