Your electrical panel is the starting point for all the branch circuits that run throughout your home. It also houses the main breaker. There are a number of instances where you might need a panel tune-up or increase. Perhaps the most common is to allow for new circuits: you may want to add several outlets, or hook up a new appliance on its own circuit. Assuming there's space left in the panel, and it can handle the new load, you can add the circuit. One way to maximize the load your panel can take, is by arranging the circuits in proper balance. Also called 'balancing the load,' this technique lowers heat buildup, and helps prevent false tripping. However, if the new load on the panel will be too great, or you have no more room to add circuits, it's time for a panel increase. Panels are rated in amps. You could replace a 100-amp panel with a 200-amp. Or, you could add a second panel. Your electrician will know how to calculate the total load for your home; he or she can then advise whether you need a larger panel.
