If you only use your good china on special occasions, store each piece in a plastic bag. You can also find protective sleeves designed for that very purpose. If possible, find a storage rack that allows you to store plates vertically. If you have to stack them, put a paper plate between each piece to prevent scratching. Cups should be stored with the rim up, to prevent moisture from condensing underneath. You can store them upside down if you have a special shelf liner that allows ventilation.
