The tax credit for the elderly is available mainly to people who are 65 or older and don't receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits. It also covers people under 65 who are permanently and totally disabled and receive a disability pension. The credit reduces taxes, but if it's greater than the amount you owe, it can't be used for a refund. You may qualify for the tax credit for 2006 if you meet one of the following conditions: your 65th birthday is on or before January 1, 2007, or you are under 65 and permanently and totally disabled and receiving disability income. You can claim the credit on Schedule R of Form 1040 (10-40), or, if you use 1040A (10-40-A), claim the credit on Schedule 3. You can't claim it on the 1040EZ (10-40 E-Z). These tips are provided to give you general information about your taxes. If you have specific questions, please consult a tax advisor or call the toll-free number for Federal Tax Information and Assistance at 1-800-829-1040.
