Eugene (KMTR) - A group of college students extended a hand to help people who are homeless and low income families with a picnic and free clothing.

People showed up early at Alton Baker Park for the annual "Potluck in the Park" Sunday.

The free meal event is put on by members of Alpha Phi Omega, A co-ed community service fraternity at the University of Oregon.

Around 300 people showed up for hotdogs, salads and chips.

The group relies on donations, and says this year has been especially rough; donations have been down.  Still, the fraternity was able to raise enough money to handle the large turnout.

Organizers say it wasn't just about feeding people, but creating a community event.

Co-chair Ben Weiner said, “Everybody goes through hard times. It's important to have that real interaction."

“Well, I think it's great, what they're doing for the community. It gives a chance for people to get to know each other and make new friends," said lunch guest Steve Friend.

University sororities helped with collecting clothing and canned food donations.  The group hopes to hold a smaller, similar event this fall.
