Eugene (KMTR) - Helping local charities can be as easy as a piece of cake, as a group of Sheldon High School students are proving every week.
The Cupcake Club makes homemade cupcakes every week, sells them Tuesdays after school, and at the end of the month they donate the profits to local charities.
It's the brainchild of Sheldon senior Lily Bussel, who's been baking since she was a little girl. She’s done community service for most of her life, as well.
She decided to combine her two loves, baking and community service, to see what happens.
It wasn’t easy. It took five months for the school to give her the okay, because of safe food-handling requirements. But once it got started she found everything sold like-- cupcakes.
Tuesday afternoon’s batch of 36 homemade cupcakes-- a dozen each of chocolate, apple, and cinnamon-- sold in less than half an hour.
“I've never really thought that baking would take off for me like this,” said Lily. “But it really has and I’m thinking about possibly maybe a cupcake shop later on in life and donating a portion of the proceeds to charity. So this baking, this is hopefully going to stay for a little while."
The Cupcake Club votes on where to donate the profits at the end of every month. So far, they've given over a $1000 to agencies from Birth to Three to FOOD for Lane County to Womenspace.
Lily graduates in about a month, but the Cupcake Club will stay on at Sheldon, thanks to some eager younger bakers who will carry on the effort.
