Parvovirus
CAUSE:
Canine Parvovirus is an extremely contagious dog illness, and puppies are especially susceptible. The disease is most often transmitted by fecal/oral contact. The virus can survive 6 months or more in the environment. A bleach/water solution is recommended disinfectant.
SYMPTOMS:
Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, depression, and low grade fever. There is a sweet, foul odor to a parvo dog. Treatment often requires the help of a veterinarian to monitor for dehydration and electrolyte balance. Rehydration may require intravenous feeding or subcutaneous fluid injections.
DIAGNOSIS:
Diagnosis requires a laboratory test. Canine coronavirus, a very similar illness in symptoms and treatment is often mistaken for parvo, but is far less severe.
PREVENTION:
Commercial vaccinations are available, ask advice for a suitable vaccination schedule. Maternal immunization is helpful, but after weaning and during the vaccination series the puppy is highly susceptible to the virus. It is advisable to avoid public parks and other areas frequented by dogs until after 20 weeks of age and the shot is finished.
