III. RECRUITMENT INITIATIVES

TYPE OF RECRUITMENT INITIATIVE
(MENU SELECTION)

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY

1

Participate in Job Fair

On February 10, 2009, our SEU participated in Lane County’s Youth Career Fair, “Passport to the 21st Century,” designed to provide Lane County youth a safe, non-threatening venue to explore career paths and opportunities. Lane County employers, job training organizations and educational institutions provided an estimated 2,000 area high school students an opportunity to connect with their future workforce at the Lane Events Center (Lane County Fairgrounds) in Eugene, Oregon.

SEU participants – our business manager, traffic manager, executive assistant/office manager, news anchor, and news videographer distributed literature on job shadows, internships and job descriptions for industry positions. Interacted with students and demonstrated the SEU’s expanded website technologies, e.g., streaming video, advertising and access to program information.

2

Internship Program

Our SEU hosts internship programs throughout the year to develop talent and interest in the industry while providing students with practical work experience.
During this reporting period, we hosted interns:

  • Fall 2008 – 1 U. of O. student in the News Department.
  • Winter 2008 - 1 U. of O. student in News Department and 2 Academy of Arts and Sciences students in news/marketing/creative services.
  • Spring 2009 - 3 U. of O. students and 1 Lane Community College student. All 4 interns were assigned in our News Department.
  • Summer 2009 – 3 U. of O. students assigned to our news department.

Interns observe and participate in story development and newscast production in many ways, such as gathering facts for assigned stories, recording audio and video and editing material, developing preliminary rundowns, as well as attending content meetings with newsroom personnel.

3

Host events for local educational institutions or community organizations relating to broadcast careers

Our SEU regularly hosts students considering a career path in television broadcasting.  These one-day job shadows provide participants with an opportunity to work along-side seasoned professionals and observe day-to-day operations in a television workplace setting and see the talents and skills required to perform the various duties and responsibilities.

During this reporting period, we hosted a total of 10 students

  • Springfield High Student Samantha May, shadowed the News Department on January 1, 2009
  • Monroe Middle School student, Austin Williams, shadowed our Local Sales Manager, Barbara Brancato., on April 24, 2009.

4

Participate in Job Fair

On April 22, 2009 our SEU participated in the Lane Community College Career Fair 2009 - “A Year of Change and Hope.” This one-day event is LCC’s job recruitment event of the year and offers students and community members the chance to connect with employers from diverse business organizations and industries. Participants discover the opportunities available and is provided free of charge.

SEU participants - our News Director, General Sales Manager, and Creative Services Manager discussed broadcasting careers, current job openings and educational requirements with many of the estimated 200 attendees. They also displayed and distributed literature on job shadows, internships, job descriptions and current job openings.

5

Participate in Career Days to disseminate information about employment opportunities in television broadcasting

In cooperation with the Springfield Chamber of Commerce and the Springfield School District our SBU participates in a number of Career Fairs in the Springfield community.

  • On October 15, 2008, University of Oregon Journalism Class.  News Director Rob McMichaels and Anchor Mark Mullins spoke with the class.

Participate in Sales and Marketing Business Competition with local area high schools.

The Director of Marketing and New Media for our SEU, Kathie Dougherty, judged teams of students from Willamette High School, Thurston High School, and Springfield High School during their Sales and Marketing Business Competition on January 30, 2009. Team Members assumed the roles of internet security consultants, managers of a facility, or managers in a chosen occupational area.  Skills of Marketing research, development, promotion, account management and operations were among the areas judged.
