It’s October and that means pink is in!

Dr. Chicola is the only radiologist in the southern Willamette Valley who dedicates 100 percent of her time to reading breast images. In this life-saving role, she has led the improvement of clinical services to benefit every woman in our community.

It’s October, my friends! That means Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the season of pink. In addition to reminding you about your monthly breast self-exam and scheduling an annual mammogram, I want to share two important events happening this month.

Oregon Imaging Center presents Pinktini

First, get ready for an evening of fun and frills at Oregon Imaging Center’s Pinktini, a girls’ night out to benefit Komen Oregon (guys are welcome, too, of course!). Throw on that little black or pink dress and get ready for some “tatatinis,” “pinktinis” and “mammoritas.” The benefit, to be held Wednesday, Oct. 19 from 5:30-8:30 p.m., will also include free appetizers, music, prizes and a silent auction.

For more details, visit Oregon Imaging Centers. Pre-register online by October 17 for free admission or pay $5 at the door.

Last year, the first annual Eugene Race for the Cure broke records as the biggest inaugural event of Susan G. Komen’s affiliates. Now, we are just weeks away from the 2nd annual Komen Eugene Race for the Cure, and we’re ready to make history again. Whether you’re a competitive runner or stroll-along walker, I encourage you to participate in this family-friendly event.

Race for the Cure participation and donations help Komen Oregon support breast cancer education, research, screenings and treatments for those in our community –75 percent of the funds raised stay local to provide:

  • Education about breast cancer and early detection
  • Information and support for breast cancer survivors and their families
  • Funding for free mammograms for women who are uninsured or underinsured
  • Funding for transportation and treatment support for survivors

Participating in Race for the Cure is like swimming in a sea of pink. So, register, lace your sneakers, start making posters in honor of loved ones in your life fighting the disease, and join us on Race Day. Know that every step we take together during the Race supports Komen’s mission to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all, and energize science to find the cures.

And if you’re 40 or older and haven’t already, please schedule your annual mammogram. It could save your life.
