They say it never rains at Autzen Stadium. Well, I have news for you – it came down in buckets the morning of Race Day. But the rain did little to dampen the spirits of those who participated.
On the morning of October 10, our community showed us what it was made of. I’m told nearly 7,000 runners, walkers and volunteers showed up for the inaugural Komen Eugene Race for the Cure, wearing everything from track suits to pink wigs, pink tie-dye and even glittery Wonder Woman costumes. I was there, and I had a great time. I hope you did, too.
It was a time to celebrate breast cancer survivors, remember those who lost the battle. And in the process, we raised a lot of money for a great organization fighting to save lives, here, in our community. We worked hard to ensure that Oregon women, regardless of their circumstances, have access to free screenings, important health education and much more through Komen-funded programs.
As Honorary Medical Chair for the first-ever Eugene Race for the Cure, I want to thank all of the Make time for the girls teams members and each and every one of you who braved the weather and raised funds to make this Race the most successful inaugural event in Susan G Komen history. What a great way to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and show the world how Eugene, Oregon puts on a race!
Also happening during Breast Cancer Awareness Month is Shades of Pink on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at the Hilton Eugene from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. It’s a fun night out for women that includes wine and food, booths with health and wellness information, prize drawings and more.
I’ll be one of the speakers that evening, and we’ll have a chance to talk at greater length about breast health, the latest in the fight against breast cancer and lifestyle choices. Please stop by and bring your questions, because the answers could help someone else, too.
