My father was a Senior Master Sergeant in the US Air Force, so I grew up moving from state to state and country to country. I started school in England and changed schools thirteen times through twelve grades. Growing up, I lived in the states of California, New York, Florida and North Carolina, and spent two-and-a-half years in England and on the island of Okinawa.
I joined the USAF myself in 1967 and served four years. During my tour of duty I was stationed in Texas, California, Mississippi and Louisiana, and one-and-a-half of those years were spent in Vietnam at Phan Rang Air Force Base (February 1969 to September 1970). My wife Catherine and I were married in January of 1971 just before I got out of the Air Force. Catherine has been a teacher’s assistant at Centennial Elementary School in Springfield since 1990. We have two sons, Aaron and Justin and we have lived in Springfield since 1988. Our oldest son Aaron is a paramedic for Tualatin Valley Fire Department and his wife Lauren have a son Kai who was born in August 2007 and daughter Waverly born June 8, 2010. Justin, who has a MA in School Counseling, is an admissions counselor for a private boys school in Carlsbad, California and lives in San Diego. He spends most of his free time bicycle racing.
I have an MA in Climatology from San Francisco State University. I started my forecasting career with Jet Stream Weather Inc. in the fall of 1979. Then I started doing weekend weather for KOBI-TV in Medford in 1981. I got my first full-time job as head meteorologist for KTVL-TV in Medford in 1983. I came to KMTR-TV in September of 1988 and have been the NewsSource 16 Chief Meteorologist since that time.
I am a member of the Willamette Backcountry Ski Patrol, which is a Nordic (cross-country) ski patrol. I have served as patrol director for three years and the training director for twelve years. I am a Senior Nordic Patroller and certified National Ski Patrol mountain travel and rescue (MTR) instructor and Nordic ski andtoboggan instructor. I am the Oregon Region MTR Advisor and Pacific Northwest Division Nordic Advisor.
I’m a track-and-field official and my wife Catherine and I are the captains of the Basket Crew for all the meets at Hayward Field.
I average 30 to 35 guest-speaking engagements a year on weather at local schools and service clubs. I have taught Elderhostel classes on weather through Lane Community College in Florence since 1997. I’m also a SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) volunteer at Centennial Elementary in Springfield.
