Lincoln City hides a number of glass floats, colorful pieces of blown glass along the beach

It's wet and windy on the Oregon coast, but you'll still find beach goers up and down the surf in Lincoln City. But it's after the storm when buried treasures are unearthed by the waves.

“So as long as the ocean is pulling sand out and not pushing sand in, it's exposing bars of gravel that're there all the time, they're just hiding under the sand,” Rock Your World store owner Laura Joki said.

That's precisely why geology buffs venture to Lincoln City to stroll the beach with a sharp eye.

Snowshoes are a way to get out in the woods in the snow.

You don't need a lift ticket to get a good view of the mountains in Oregon. In this week's all in a day's drive, we'll strap in for hike through the deep snow on a journey through some of Oregon's forests.

While skiers and snowboarders are taking the chair lift to the summit on Mount Bachelor, this group has something a little more relaxing in mind.

“I was really rusty at skiing, and I wasn't sure I wanted to get back into it,” first-time snowshoer Lynne Rossi said. Rossi and a group of friends traveled from Eugene to try out the sport.

“It seemed a lot safer,” Lee Rumbarger said. “And also, a lot more peaceful. A way to enjoy the beautiful snow and forest here.”

'An hour and a half really isn't enough time to see the High Desert Museum'

On Saturday, February 8, the museum is hosting a fashion show called Firearms and Fashion. Historical characters will be showing off outfits and guns they would've carried in the late 1800s. The show begins at 6 p.m.

The High Desert Museum just outside Bend offers families a glimpse at how some of Oregon's first settlers lived and lets them see wild animals up close.

“Have any of you ever hear the phrase, 'flash in the pan?'” An interpreter asks while showing off an old black powder rifle. “We get that phrase from flintlock muskets just like this.”

Families and kids are all ears, as interpreters show them a piece of frontier life in Oregon. But the smoking gun is just one attraction on this path. There are 135 acres for families to learn and explore.

Fog makes your drives look longer

Golf in the summer is both time-consuming and expensive.

You often can't play without a tee time, and players can feel rushed as they try to putt through a round.

Winter is a change of pace as those same golfers often put away the clubs and forget about them for months.

But those golfers who continue playing during cold months won’t be as rusty come spring and they can play cheaper and avoid the crowds.

Take a 'Sip Trip' to Corvallis

Moving into the former 2 Towns space is another craft upstart, Nectar Creek Honeywine, run by brothers Phil and Nick Lorenz.

Walking into his barrel room now, Dave Takush can look back fondly at where this all started three years ago, with a simple brew for a friend's wedding.

“They made some cider in Lee's basement and at the wedding, everybody loved the cider. People were dancing on tables. Everybody was just wanting more and that's kind of where the idea came from. We thought, well, we've got something here,” Takush said.

That was the unofficial birth of 2 Towns Ciderhouse, a joint venture between Takush and his two long-time friends. The tasting room just outside Corvallis offers eight flavors on tap, soon to be 16. Their bottling and fermenting operation has now outgrown its space.

“We're actually remodeling an existing space and that's going to allow us to bring our craft cider deeper into Oregon,” Takush said.

Corvallis is quickly becoming a hive for new startups in the alcohol industry. There are nearly a dozen breweries and distilleries, which are quickly outgrowing their space.

As Boyd Brumley fires up the table saw, he quickly buzzes through a small wooden tile. A puzzle piece that he'll custom-fit on a larger mosaic. His workshop is just one classroom open to people in Eugene.

“Primarily, 50 years and above, but we welcome anybody to come give it a try,” Diane Sconce said. Sconce helps run several programs for Eugene’s recreation services.

If one of your resolutions for 2014 was to learn something new, there are plenty of opportunities to do just that around town.

A worker at Spring Creek Holly Farm finishes bundling a fir tree to be loaded up for a customer.

Ron Glazier and his kids are a bit choosy when it comes to a Christmas tree.

“Usually, you can't find that perfect tree, so there's always a little bit of work to do to make it perfect,” Glazier said.

The word "perfect" is a relative term. On this particular day, their search has led them to Spring Creek Holly Farm near Leaburg.

“You can find trees in town, too,” Glazier said. “That's just more convenient, but we like to spend a little more time and get out of town a little bit.”
