The IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships get underway Tuesday morning, marking the first time the IAAF has held an event of any kind in the United States since 1992.

This is the junior championship's first appearance on U.S. soil.

If all goes well this week local organizers with TrackTown USA hope its just the start of more to come: Eugene is one of three cities bidding to host the 2019 World Championships.

About two-dozen people lined the overpass with American flags and signs on Saturday afternoon for Salem's slice of the big national movement this weekend against illegal immigration.

The organizer of the Salem protest against illegal immigration distanced her group from one woman's statements.

"We have compassion for the people coming here. But it's important they know they can't stay," said Cynthia Kendoll, president of Oregonians for Immigration Reform, the group that helped organize Salem's event. "They need to return to their home countries."

Foster care children are getting some support from wine lovers this weekend at the Taste Of Home at Sweet Cheeks Winery.

The non-profit group A Family For Every Child has helped find homes for over 300 of Lane County’s foster care children.

Rebecca Rhodes, a spokeswoman for the group, said there are currently 1,000 children from Lane County still waiting to find a home. Money raised at the Taste Of Home event goes to helping unite those kids with a family.

The Howard Buford Recreation Area was reopened Saturday after officials closed the county park to let fire crews fight a wildland fire that consumed over an acre of land.

Attic fire spreads at South Eugene home

An attic fire inside a South Eugene home spread Saturday morning, burning a large portion of the back side of the house.

No one was inside the burning home when firefighters arrived on-scene, officials said.

Firefighters responded to the house on Lincoln Street just after 6:30 a.m. Saturday to find smoke billowing from the roof.
