A fox tested positive for rabies for the first time in decades in Lane County.

"The 1960s would be the last confirmed, documented case that is well known," said Jason Davis with Lane County Health.

In Oregon, bats are often associated with the rabies virus.

An infected fox is unusual, and the community should be aware of the possible danger, Davis said.

"Foxes have more access to humans," he said. "Whereas a bat is airborne and while they do rest and interact with humans in some way, a fox could potentially pose more of a risk being in the bushes."
